Birthday emails are one of the most opened triggered campaigns in email marketing — and one of the most wasted. Most brands send something that looks automated, feels generic, and gets deleted before the coffee gets cold. BonDesign needed the opposite.
The brief was clear — design a birthday campaign that felt genuinely personal, matched BonDesign's premium brand, and drove real bookings through their partner network. Not a feel-good email. A converting one.
The Design Approach
Dropped the confetti. Dropped the clipart. Built the layout around clean typography, elegant spacing, and brand-consistent colours that actually looked like BonDesign sent it — not a Mailchimp template from 2018. Every design decision pointed toward one outcome: the member feels seen, not marketed at.
The email addresses each member by name and acknowledges their birthday without making it theatrical. The tone stays warm and sophisticated — the kind of message a luxury brand sends, not a discount retailer.
Partner Network Section
The partner showcase was the conversion engine. Designed it to feel like curated recommendations from someone who knows the member — not a grid of ads. Each partner option carries clear imagery, minimal copy, and a single CTA that takes the member exactly where they need to go to book. No confusion, no extra clicks.
Mobile-First Build
Over half of birthday emails get opened on phones — commuting, waiting, in between meetings. Built the entire layout mobile-first. Thumb-friendly buttons, text readable without pinching, images optimised to load fast on slower connections. Desktop looked great. Mobile converted.
Personalization Beyond the Name
Used Mailchimp's personalization tokens to pull in membership tier and past booking preferences where available. Members in higher tiers saw different partner recommendations than standard members. Members with past bookings in specific categories saw relevant options surfaced first. That level of relevance directly impacts click-through — generic recommendations get ignored.
Results
Open rates landed at the higher end of benchmarks for triggered campaigns. Click-through on partner options confirmed members were actively engaging — not just opening out of curiosity and bouncing. The campaign proved that a well-designed birthday email can do real commercial work without sacrificing the personal touch that makes it worth opening.
