SEO for AI Search- GEO & AEO Explained
SEO

Google isn't going anywhere. It still controls over 90% of global web search — but the way content surfaces inside it has fundamentally shifted. AI Overviews, AI Mode, and large language models are now sitting between your content and your audience. If your SEO strategy hasn't moved, you're already behind.

What Is GEO and AEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimisation) is the practice of optimising content so AI-generated answers — inside Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity, and others — pull from your pages and cite your brand.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) focuses specifically on structuring content so it directly answers questions — the kind AI models and featured snippets extract and serve instantly.

These aren't replacements for SEO. They're the next layer on top of it.

Why Traditional SEO Isn't Enough Anymore

Classic SEO optimised for crawlers — keywords, backlinks, meta tags. That still matters. But AI models don't just crawl — they interpret. They look for:

  • - Entity clarity — who you are, what you do, who you serve

  • - Topical authority — do you cover a subject deeply or just surface level

  • - Conversational relevance — does your content answer how people actually ask questions

  • - Structured, extractable answers — can the model pull a clean response from your page

A page ranking on position 3 can still feed an AI Overview if it's structured correctly. A page sitting at position 1 can get completely skipped if it's vague and unstructured.

What to Optimise for Right Now

1. Entity-Based Content Stop writing for keywords alone. Define your brand, services, and expertise as clear entities. Use consistent terminology across every page — the same way Wikipedia does. LLMs learn patterns from repetition and consistency.

2. Conversational Keywords AI search is query-driven — users ask full questions, not two-word phrases. Research how your audience phrases problems conversationally and write content that mirrors that language naturally.

3. Direct Answer Blocks Every blog post and service page should contain at least one section that answers a specific question in 2–4 clear sentences. No fluff before the answer. AI models extract these directly.

4. Structured Data Markup Implement schema — FAQPage, Article, HowTo, Organisation. This gives search engines and LLMs explicit signals about what your content contains and how to categorise it.

5. Topical Depth Over Breadth Covering 10 topics shallowly is weaker than owning 3 topics completely. Build content clusters — a pillar page supported by detailed subtopic posts — so your site signals genuine expertise in a domain.

6. Source Credibility Signals AI models prioritise sources they've seen cited, linked, and referenced across the web. Build authority through original data, case studies, and real results — not generic advice that exists on 10,000 other sites.

Practical Takeaway

Your content still needs to rank traditionally — that pipeline hasn't changed. But now it also needs to be readable by AI, extractable as answers, and credible enough for LLMs to cite.

The brands that win AI search over the next 2 years are the ones building structured, entity-clear, answer-ready content today — not scrambling to catch up when the shift is complete.

GEO and AEO aren't trends. They're the new baseline.
